‘it’s a ballsy, brassy, blow-the-doors-off riot.’ Clash
Gabi Garbutt unveils her passion-filled debut single ‘Armed With Love’ on December 1, rounding off her band’s hectic first few months, including support slots with The Libertines and Frank Turner.
Soulful and poetic, with a decidedly epic tint that Gabi ascribes to her love of The Flaming Lips, ‘Armed With Love’ is a vivid manifesto that sets out her songwriting approach, marrying the artistic ambition of literature to the visceral immediacy of punk rock and merging the personal and the political.
Gabi says of the song: “It’s about someone close to me who had some terrible stuff happen to her, and how amazed I was by how she dealt with it. It’s about the magic of the human spirit and how you should never lose hope, no matter how bad things look.”
Led by her strident, characterful vocals, this is the first official release from a forthcoming album which Gabi has been constructing in close collaboration with producer, multi-instrumentalist and Dexys member Sean Read. Gabi, a lifelong Dexys fan, met Sean when she attended a low key warm up show the legendary outfit played in rural Wales. When Sean, who has worked with everyone from the Manics and Chrissie Hynde to Beth Orton (and co-produced the last Dexys album) heard her home demos he immediately offered to not only produce but collaborate closely on every aspect of the album’s construction.
With a palate of influences spanning everything from The Clash, Ezra Furman and the CBGB set to William Blake and the unfettered energy of Northern Soul and 50s rock ‘n’ roll – witness the brass busting thrust and power of her six-piece live band The Illuminations for further evidence – Gabi was handpicked by The Libertines to support them last month. Their bassist John Hassall will also guest on the LP on a track co-written with Gabi.
